Ergon Energy has just published their new rates as of July 2023, and there is good news and bad news for those with and without a solar system. So, grab a seat and let’s dive into what this means for you.
Firstly, the bad news: Brace yourselves, because there’s been a bump in the rate and supply charges. Tariff 11, the main residential tariff, is getting a 36.5% rate increase and a 21.1% supply charge increase. Bummer, right?
Now, hold onto your hats because here’s where things get interesting. For those of you without a solar system, this means a bit of a dent in your pocket. So for an average Cairns power user of 25kWh per day the new energy rates translate to a power bill increase of nearly $900 annually! But fear not, we’ve got some sweet news coming your way!
The solar feed-in tariff is getting a major boost. We’re talking a leap from 9.3 to 13.441 cents per kilowatt hour – a whopping 21.1% increase! Now, for all you solar-powered peeps, this means more savings. You’ll be snagging cheaper power and getting paid more for that extra electricity you feed back into the grid, at a cool 13.4 cents per kilowatt hour.
But wait, there’s more! Those of you with a battery system, get ready to save even more. Instead of selling that excess power at 13.4 cents and buying it back at night, you can charge up that battery during the day and save nearly 20 cents per kilowatt hour. Talk about a win-win!
So, with energy rates climbing over 50% over the last 2 years, investing in solar has become more beneficial than ever.
