What is the solar payback period in Queensland?
Here is a worked example using the middle of those ranges. Say your 6.6 kW system averages 28 kWh a day across the year. Say grid power costs you 32 c/kWh, and anything you export earns the 2026 regional feed-in tariff of 6.006 c/kWh.

When is solar not worth it?
We would rather tell you this before you spend money than after. There are three situations where we say hold off.
A heavily shaded roof. Big trees, a taller neighbouring building, or a hill to the north can cut production hard. Panels in shade for half the day change the whole equation. Before quoting we check your roof properly, and our roof suitability guide for Cairns explains what we look for.
Moving within 2 years. Payback takes 3 to 5 years, so if you sell at year 2 you will not see the full return on your bills. Solar does tend to lift property value, which claws some of that back, but if a move is locked in, we usually say wait and install at the new place.
Very low daytime use with no battery. If everyone is out from 7am to 6pm, the pool pump is off, and you have no battery, most of your solar gets exported at 6.006 c/kWh. Run the same 28 kWh a day system at only 20% self-consumption and the saving drops to roughly $1,100 a year, which pushes payback past 6 years. Still positive, but weak. A timer on the hot water or a battery fixes it, but on its own it is a poor deal.
That is the honest list. Everyone else, which is most Cairns households, comes out ahead.
How does the 2026 feed-in tariff drop change the answer?
From 1 July 2026, the regional Queensland feed-in tariff set by the QCA is 6.006 c/kWh, paid through Ergon. That is a big drop from the old days, and it changes how solar pays, not whether it pays.
Ten years ago, export credits carried the case for solar. In 2026 they are a small bonus. The value now sits almost entirely in self-consumption: using your own 30 to 35 cent power instead of buying it. You get paid about 6 cents to export a kilowatt hour, but you save about 32 cents by using it. Using it is worth five times more.
In practice that means small habit changes. Run the dishwasher and washing machine in the middle of the day. Put the pool pump on a daytime timer. Pre-cool the house with aircon in the afternoon so it coasts into the evening. Households that shift their load like this land in the top rows of the table above. What about renters and units?
Two honest edge cases.
If you rent, you cannot install solar yourself. The best move is to show your landlord the payback numbers above, because solar makes the property easier to rent and more valuable to sell. Beyond that conversation, your options are limited.

Is a battery worth it in Cairns?
For a growing share of our customers, yes. A 13.5 kWh battery installed costs about $12,000 to $16,000 before rebates. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program, running since 1 July 2025, takes roughly 30% off an installed battery. From 1 May 2026 the discount is tiered: about $252 per usable kWh for the first 14 kWh, about $151 per kWh from 14 to 28 kWh, and about $38 per kWh from 28 to 50 kWh. A battery makes sense in two Cairns situations. First, high evening use. If your big power hours are 6pm to 10pm, a battery lets you run the evening on stored solar instead of 32 cent grid power. Second, cyclone season. Does the wet season ruin solar in the tropics?
No, and this surprises people. The wet season runs November to April, and yes, December production dips. But that 5 peak sun hour average already includes every cloudy build-up afternoon and every monsoon week. The dry season more than makes up for it, and panels still produce on overcast days, which we measured for our post on whether solar panels work on cloudy days.
Tropical heat trims panel efficiency slightly, but the sheer amount of sun Cairns gets beats almost anywhere in the country. The real tropical requirement is build quality.
